For 7 innings the Emporia State baseball team was in control during their showdown with William Jewell Wednesday before the wheels fell off in a 11-7 loss.
A Mitch Sloan Grand Slam in the first inning gave the Hornets a 4-0 lead. The Hornets added 3 more runs in the 4th on singles by Mitch Sloan and Alex Pener and a sacrifice fly by Brian Grove to take a 7-1 lead.
William Jewel began their rally in the 8th inning scoring 7 runs thanks to 2 bases loaded walks and a grand slam. William Jewel scored 3 more runs in the 9th for the win.
The two teams play a doubleheader Thursday with both games to be played in Andover at Andover Central High School.
