The areas most recent round of wintry weather won’t stop local residents from taking a dip in Mouse Lake Saturday.
The annual Polar Plunge in Emporia is happening Saturday morning. Due to the recent burst of winter weather however, some adjustments have been made to the original schedule.
The annual Polar Strut will not be taking place as according to Emporia Recreation Commission Sports Supervisor Amanda Guiterrez, the snowfall on the ground makes the 5K unsafe for runners. She adds, however, if you still wish to run the route for the Super Series you may do so.
Everything else will remain on schedule, this includes the costume contest which begins at 11:15 am, the pluck a duck at noon and of course the plunge itself at 11:30. In terms of the plunge, Lyon County Undersheriff John Koelsch says Saturday will truly be a polar like experience.
All funds raised from the event go to benefit Special Olympics Kansas and helps to cover costs such as medals, volunteer t-shirts, free screenings for athletes and putting on the numerous competitions held throughout the year including the annual summer games in Wichita.
Along with the previously mentioned activities, there will also be a biscuits and gravy feed, silent auction and taco lunch at the Emporia Senior Center. Proceeds from those events all go to benefit local Special Olympics athletes.
