After light snowfall Tuesday night, travel improved rapidly through the day Wednesday.
Improvements were noticeable through the morning even as mostly cloudy conditions continued up until close to noon. The afternoon combination of sunshine and temperatures in the mid-30s continued the melting process for major arterials and residential collector streets, although most residential streets remained snowpacked through the day.
County roads became slushy as Wednesday wore on but were considered in good shape for most of the day. State and federal highways went from partly or completely snowpacked to dry as the day continued.
There is an isolated risk of refreezing as temperatures slide back to the low 20s overnight, but more melting is expected Thursday as temperatures climb into the 40s.
For the most part, Tuesday snow totals were light:
*KVOE studios: 2 inches
*Ninth and Lawrence: 2 inches
*Tenth and Weaver: 2 inches
*Central Emporia: 4 inches
*Allen: 1.5 inches

6:15 am Wednesday: Light snow leads to latest round of slow travel areawide
Melting will begin soon after our latest round of snowfall Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
Two inches of snow in Emporia has made for another slick drive to work. Current snow totals:
*KVOE studios: 2 inches
*Ninth and Lawrence: 2 inches
*Tenth and Weaver: 2 inches
*Allen: 1.5 inches
Driving conditions are snowpacked and slick in Emporia and will stay that way for several hours, according to Emporia Police Lt. Scott Stormont.
Assistant County Engineer Jim Brull says crews started early and worked into the overnight hours — and as a result, county roads are in relatively good shape.
TV-13 meteorologist Doug Meyers says road conditions here may be the best across eastern Kansas, but he cautions drivers not to let their guard down.
Abundant sunshine will help the melting process before noon. We should also get above freezing by early afternoon. Temperatures climb into the 40s Thursday after overnight lows around 20.
Winter weather advisories continue for Lyon, Coffey, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties until 9 am.
