Officials with the Fifth Judicial District in Emporia and Cottonwood Falls are warning residents not to fall for a scam now circulating in the KVOE listening area.
Court Administrator Ruth Wheeler says at least one person claiming to be associated with District Court has called residents, telling them they have to pay an outstanding court balance immediately or risk having a warrant issued for their arrest.
Wheeler says the calls are a scam. District Court does not call people to collect money, although the office will send letters through the mail towards that end.
Wheeler also says people should not give out personal information over the phone. Instead, they should simply hang up and call law enforcement if they receive a call like this.
