The Madison and Olpe boys advanced to Saturday’s Regional Championship games, while securing Sub-State spots, Friday night.
The Madison boys came from behind to clip Waverly 57-56. Kelton Buettner hit the game-winner with 7.9 seconds to play, erasing a double-digit fourth quarter deficit. Madison coach Brett Dannels says hist team’s gut and determination was the key to the win.
Madison was led by Buettner’s 17 points. Ryan Wolgram added 14 and Chase Harrison chipped in 10. Waverly was led by Rawlin Hively’s 16 points. Hively fouled out with 2:10 to play after picking up his fourth foul and then being assessed a technical.
Madison will take on Olpe in the Regional Championship game, after Olpe used a 13-7 third quarter to pick up a 56-45 win over Southern Coffey County. Olpe jumped out to a 16-8 first quarter lead, but only led by three at halftime. Jordan Barnard helped propel the Eagles, scoring 18 of his game-high 27 points in the second half — including five three-pointers. Olpe coach Chris Schmidt says getting out in front, early, was a big key to the win.
Camden Hoelting joined Barnard in double figures with 14 points. SCC was led Dawson Leimkuhler with 15.
