Pittsburg State never trailed in their 82-76 win over the Emporia State women Thursday night. In the mens game Pittsburg State used a 17-5 to close the game while out scoring the Emporia State 73-69.
In the womens game Pittsburg State scored the first 5 points of the game and Emporia State never did tie the game or take the lead. Pittsburg States biggest lead was by 16 points in the 3rd quarter. The Lady Hornets did make a run in the 4th quarter cutting the deficit to 4 points 3 times in the final 1:30 of the game. Emporia State Coach Toby Wynn says the first quarter was the difference, when Pittsburg State made 6 three point shots.
Tyra Jones scored 21 points to lead Emporia State in scoring, Jessica Wayne added 19 points and Kali Martin finished with 10 points. Pittsburg State was led by Kaylee DaMitz with 22 points. The Lady Hornets fall to 20-6 for the season and 11-5 in the MIAA.
In the mens game Emporia State built a 14 point lead with 10:18 to play in the game. They would go scoreless for 5 minutes and had their lead cut to 8 points. Pittsburg State continued the run and out scored the Hornets 17-5 in the final 5:22 of the game. Emporia State Coach Craig Doty said the defensive effort needed to be better in the 2nd half.
Julius Jackson scored a game high 22 points to lead Emporia State. Malik Hluchoweckyj added 16 points, all in the 2nd half. Hassan Thomas finished with 12 points. Pittsburg State was led by Donovan Franklin who finished with 21 points. The Emporia State men are now 11-14 for the season and 6-10 in the MIAA.
Emporia State plays their final home games Saturday when they host Missouri Southern. The mens game will be played first at 3pm. The womens game will tip-off at 5pm.
