51st District Representative Ron Highland has asked to be taken off the sponsorship list for a controversial bill relating to same-sex marriages and the LGBT community.
Highland co-sponsored HB 2320, which is listed as a bill to enact what’s called the Marriage and Constitution Restoration Act. The nine-page bill, among other statements, refers to same-sex marriages as “a parody.” Highland was then called out by his daughter, Christel Highland, who posted a letter on social media decrying that support.
Highland says he trusted the author of the bill, who wrote several other bills Highland supports, including initiatives regarding human trafficking and pornography filtering devices. However, Highland says he made a mistake in co-sponsoring HB 2320 and has asked for his name to be removed. He says the bill contains hateful language and “is against our Lord’s command to love our neighbors.”
Highland has apologized. He has also declined further comment.
