Formal charges have been filed against a Texas man accused of transporting a large quantity of methamphetamine through Lyon County last week.
The Kansas Highway Patrol says 29-year-old Luis Alonzo Alvarado of Canutillo, Texas, was stopped shortly after noon Feb. 20 at mile marker 120, about seven miles south of Emporia’s Kansas Turnpike tollgate. Alvarado was allegedly driving down the center of the northbound lanes, and the license plate was partially covered. Those reported observations led to traffic violations and a resulting stop. Alvarado was also driving a pickup truk registered to somebody else from Texas, according to the paperwork.
The Highway Patrol gained consent to search and says it found over 30 pounds of methamphetamine in 13 separate aluminum foil-wrapped bundles, finding those in an aftermarket compartment of the dashboard.
Alvarado has been formally charged with single counts of possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute, illegal use of a communication device and felony possession of drug paraphernalia. Word on a first appearance date in Lyon County District Court is pending.
