The man accused of transporting 30 pounds of methamphetamine through Lyon County last week is now set for a preliminary hearing next month.
Luis Alonzo Alvarado, 29, is facing a hearing at 2 pm March 13 in Lyon County District Court. Judge Jeff Larson will preside.
Alvarado, of Canutillo, Texas, was formally charged Friday with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, illegal use of a communication device and felony possession of drug paraphernalia after a traffic stop on the Kansas Turnpike seven miles southwest of Emporia on Feb. 20. In court documents provided to KVOE News by the Fifth Judicial District, the Kansas Highway Patrol says it noted several traffic violations as Alvarado drove a pickup through Lyon County. As part of a resulting traffic stop, the Highway Patrol says it noted several potential indicators of “major criminal activity,” gained consent to search and found the drugs in an aftermarket compartment in the truck’s dashboard after a K-9 sniff.
The law enforcement investigation into this case is ongoing.
