Lyon County Appraiser Gary Stapp is nearing retirement.
Stapp tells KVOE News his retirement will be official May 31, thus ending a nearly 10-year stint as County Appraiser here and a nearly 30-year career in county government as a whole. After serving as Anderson County Appraiser for 20 years, Stapp said it made sense to come back to Emporia after he graduated from ESU.
Commission Chair Rollie Martin says Stapp was a thorough appraiser who was solid at record-keeping and was able to justify his appraisal recommendations. He says the county is now starting its search for a new appraiser.
Stapp says he and his wife had been discussing retirement for several months, but she accepted a buyout from Wolf Creek that sped up his retirement process.
Besides serving as Lyon County’s appraiser, Stapp has also written numerous plays — both before and during his tenure. He tells KVOE News he will continue writing plays but will have a lot more days off once he and his wife move to Texas.
