The Waverly Lady Bulldogs are heading to the state tournament after a 53-50 substate championship win over Argonia in El Dorado Saturday.
Argonia would lead at the end of the first quarter 12-8 before a 17-14 run in the second would see Madison pull within one at halftime 26-25. In the second half Argonia would lead throughout the entire third quarter and most of the fourth, however, struggles at the foul line would the leave the door open for Waverly to take the lead back with less than four minutes to play.
Argonia would come as close as one but could never retake the lead as Waverly would hold on to clinch the sub-state championship.
Coach Ty Piper says his team showed a lot of toughness throughout the game.
Waverly was led in scoring by junior Megan Foster with 19 points. Senior Cora Vineyard led Argonia with 23 points. With the win Waverly now advances to the state tournament to be played next week in Dodge City.
