Funeral services have been announced for Rev. Dr. Michael Moore, the longtime pastor of Emporia’s St. James Missionary Baptist Church who passed away Feb. 22 at the age of 72.
Moore was born in Lawrence in 1947 and married Iona Murray in 1982 in Topeka.
Moore started his ministry at Topeka’s Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church, coming to Emporia in 1994. He was still serving as St. James’ pastor at the time of his death last month. He also had served as vice moderator of the Smoky Hill District of the Missionary Baptist Church as well as assistant dean of Western Baptist Bible College, where he taught in Junction City, Topeka and Wichita.
Before entering ministry, Moore was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in Vietnam. He also worked for Farmland in Lawrence.
Moore is survived by his wife, as well as two sons, two daughters and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-children.
Funeral services will be at 10 am Thursday at Emporia’s First United Methodist Church. The graveside service will be at 1 pm Friday at the Oak Hill Cemetery of Lawrence. Visitation will be 6:30-8 pm Wednesday at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.
A memorial has been established with St. James Missionary Baptist Church. Donations can be made in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett.
