Severe Weather Awareness Week is officially over, ending Friday with an emphasis on flood safety.
Lyon County Zoning and Floodplain Administrator Sam Seeley tells KVOE News it doesn’t take a lot of water to float a person or a vehicle.
Seeley also reminds residents not to drive past barricades. He says doing that puts you, anybody in your vehicle and others at risk.
Over half of flood deaths happen when people drive into floodwaters, and there are more deaths due to flooding than any other severe weather risk factor.
While Severe Weather Awareness Week is done for the year, the severe weather emphasis continues locally with Lyon County’s annual storm spotter training session coming at 7 pm Monday at the Bowyer Community Building.
Meanwhile, Seeley continues work on flood risk maps, which will be updated to give county officials a current sense of what properties or areas may be susceptible to flooding. An open house is coming in May, with the maps to be finalized in November.
