An Emporia State University organization is in preparations to light the way for hope next month.
The third annual Light the Way for Hope Suicide Prevention Walk, organized by Hornets for Hope, will be taking place April 6. Hornets for Hope is a student-led organization dedicated to spreading suicide awareness and provide resources to students battling depression, anxiety or suicidal thoughts.
Hornets for Hope President Eli Wright, a recent guest of KVOE’s Talk of Emporia says many of their members have either suffered loss or struggled with suicide in their lives.
Hornets for Hope was founded three years ago and since that time has held the annual Light the Way for Hope Walk. Wright explains the walk is the group’s key event for creating connections with fellow students and the community.
The event will also feature a raffle and a guest speaker who will be sharing their personal story with those in attendance. During last year’s event, the featured speaker was Hornets for Hope Secretary Lucas Lorde.
Lorde says sharing his experience with other individuals in similar situations has helped him become more open about his past struggles.
Any and all proceeds from the event will help to cover the cost of Question Persuade Refer (QPR) training for Hornets for Hope Members.
Light the Way for Hope will begin in the ESU Memorial Union Square and the walk itself will follow the “black path” at ESU. Light the Way for Hope will run from 10 am to 2 pm Saturday, April 6.
Those wishing to take part may register the day of the event or on the Hornets for Hope Facebook Page.
