Drivers on the Kansas Turnpike southwest of Emporia can expect a lot of smoke across the highway Monday.
The Turnpike Authority says ag producers are planning range burns through the day, especially between mile markers 105-114 or 22 to 13 miles southwest of Emporia. Drivers going through the smoke are encouraged to slow down, use low-beam headlights and — if the smoke is too thick for safely driving — pull over to the right and stop with hazard lights on.
The rangeland burning comes as the Turnpike Authority continues work just northeast of Emporia. The northbound and southbound outside lanes are closed from mile markers 128-131. Speeds are also reduced to 65 mph as work resumes on a series of bridges between the Emporia gate and the Emporia service area.
