Details are pending, but Lyon County’s RSVP program will likely be resuming soon.
The North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging says it has been awarded funds for the county’s Retired Senior Volunteer Program. The funding is coming from the Corporation of National and Community Services.
The money and a local match will create the Flint Hills RSVP program after Lyon County relinquished its longstanding grant last year as the county transferred the oversight of many senior services to the Area Agency. The funding amount and terms of the local match have not been released, but the money will support the program for three years.
The new RSVP program, which is part of the volunteer network called Senior Corps, will be part of the Area Agency’s list of services available at the Friendship Center, 221 West Logan. Volunteers will work on projects addressing senior hunger, elder justice, social isolation, drug issues, falls prevention and overall senior health issues. As was the case before the prior grant ended, RSVP volunteers will also be involved in Senior Patrol if they choose.
Area Agency Executive Director Julie Govert-Walter says a search is underway for a coordinator and a launch event is under development. For more information or to participate, call the Area Agency at 800-432-2703.
