The Emporia High softball team opened their season with a doubleheader sweep of Wamego Thursday. The Lady Spartans won the first game 12-1 in 5 innings and the 2nd game 10-7.
In the first game the Lady Spartans scored 3 runs in the 1st and 3 more in the 2nd inning. The closed out the game with 4 runs in the 5th inning. Carli Lupkes was 2 for 2 with 3 RBI. Kaylee Thomas drove in 3 runs with a double in the first and a sacrifice fly. Paige Thomas was 3 for 4 with a 2 run home run in the 5th.
In the 2nd game Emporia High was trailing 4-2 going to the second inning when they scored 7 runs. They scored the 7 runs on 5 singles and 3 Wamego errors. Carli Lupkes was 3 for 4 in the game driving in a run in the first inning. Payten Redeker drove in 2 runs with a single in the 2nd inning. Paige Thomas drove in 2 runs with a single in the 2nd and a solo home run in the 4th.
Coach Troy Chapman was glad to get the sweep, but there is room for improvement.
The Lady Spartans return to the diamond next Friday when they host Topeka Seaman.
