The Emporia State baseball team swept a doubleheader from Newman Tuesday. Winning the first game 5-4 and the 2nd game 13-2.
In the first game Aaron Dees hit a 2 run home run in the first inning to get the scoring started. Emporia State added single runs in the 3rd when Connor Hurst scored on a Lou Penner single. In the 5th on a Cooper Minnick home run and in the 6th when Tyrus Barclay scored on a Josh Norlin single. Jarrett Stensen was the winning pitcher going 4.1 innings giving up 3 runs on 3 hits.
In the 2nd game the Hornets scored 7 runs in the first inning. Connor Hurst drove in 3 runs with a double. Paul Claassen drove in 2 runs with a single. In the 2nd inning Tucker Perkins hit a 2 run home run. The Hornets added a run in the 6th and scored 3 more runs in the 7th. Adam Thies was the winning pitcher going 4 innings giving up no runs on 3 hits with 4 strikeouts.
The Hornets have won 5 in a row and are now 17-9 for the season. They are scheduled to host Missouri Southern in a 3 game series beginning Friday.
Emporia States Connor Hurst has been named the MIAA baseball hitter of the week. He hit 6 home runs as the Hornets went 4-1 last week.
