A little friendly competition is helping to support efforts of the Sertoma Club.
The club held their inaugural chilli cookoff Saturday at Flint Hills Technical College with 14 different chilis for the community to sample. Sertoma Club member and event organizer Bill Huth says all proceeds from the event will benefit the Emporia community through the numerous projects and events the organization puts on throughout the year.
He says this includes providing scholarships, donations to public events, the club’s hearing aid program and of course the Sertoma train. Huth tells KVOE News the club has been in the process of repairing flood damage with funds from their recently completed capital campaign and the extra funds from the cookoff will certainly help with the work.
Huth adds the club has gained notoriety throughout the community thanks to projects like the train and their annual biscuits and gravy feed. Club members are hopeful the chilli cookoff will help bring more notoriety to the club and possibly become an annual tradition down the road.
Huth also thanked FHTC for allowing them to host the event on their campus and hopes to see that relationship continue to grow as well. After sampling each of the chilli’s available, residents cast their vote for their favorite with the winner receiving 50 percent of the proceeds and a highly coveted engraved ladle as a trophy.
The winner of the cookoff will be announced at a later time. For photos from the cookoff visit this story at KVOE.com.
