With just three weeks to go before disc golfers from around the country — and the world — descend upon Emporia, organizers of the Glass Blown Open have an exciting week of activities ready to go.
The Glass Blown Open has quickly become the world’s largest disc golf competition, next to the world championships. Tournament Director Doug Bjerkass believes this has to do with the fact that organizers “don’t settle” when it comes to the list of events offered in addition to the competition.
Along with classic traditions such as the GBO Block Party and Swedish Bonfire, this year will see the addition of a new event known as the Rainwater Razz Round. This round of play takes a big step away from traditional golf as, according to Dynamic Discs owner and event organizer Jeremy Rusco, audience participation is not only expected, it’s highly encouraged.
The Razz Round will take place 30 minutes after the men’s champion is crowned on the 27th. Spectators will be armed with cowbells and are encouraged to bring any other noise-making device to distract competitors during play. Needless to say, the new event takes community involvement to a whole new level.
Speaking of community involvement, Dynamic Discs owner and event organizer Jeremy Rusco says the community is a key component of what makes the GBO such a special event.
This year players from 47 states and 10 countries, including the first player from China, will compete at the GBO. Bjerkaas believes the high level of participation is due partly to the atmosphere of the event and also the prestige that comes with taking home the GBO Trophy.
The Glass Blown Open officially begins Saturday, April 20th and will run through Saturday, April 27th. For a full schedule of GBO events visit Glassblownopen.com or click here
