Flint Hills Technical College has named its Distinguished Alum for the year.
Ben Schears, a 1999 graduate from the college’s Industrial Engineering program, has served as president of Northwest Kansas Technical College since 2016 and also served in several roles at Cowley College for 13 years before that. On KVOE’s Tech Talk with President Dr. Dean Hollenbeck this week, Schears said his time at the college was pivotal for his current success as an educator and college administrator. He started classes while a student at Olpe High School, but he admits not excelling in school until he started college classes.
Since graduating from Flint Hills Technical College, Schears has served on the Governor’s Education Council, Kansas Association of Technical Colleges and 21st Century Education Advisory Council among several civic and community groups.
Schears will be formally honored at the college’s annual Night of Inspiration gala April 26. Vice President for Advancement Mike Crouch says one of the things that makes the night special is the food from the Culinary Arts department. As he puts it, the event “is the food show of the year.”
Tickets are $60 for individuals or $440 for a table of eight. The event features live and silent auctions and live music from the Fountain City 45’s. Vektek is the presenting sponsor.
