A decision was made regarding the fate of the now vacant school in Reading on Wednesday night’s April USD 251 Board of Education meeting.
Board members deliberated on the costs and benefits of either auctioning the building outright or listing it on the market for a certain amount of time, and then auctioning it should there be no action. Some members of the board argued that listing the school before auctioning would cost the district more money than it’s worth. On the other side, other members argued listing the school would give the district more control on the overall process and on who purchases the building. USD 251 Superintendent Mike Mathes gives the details of the final decision.
USD 251 has enlisted Keller Williams Realty for listing the building and the process for listing the school will begin as soon as possible, with the hopes that the building will either be sold or auctioned off in a timely manner.
Other discussion items that highlighted the meeting were an update on the new Northern Heights High School Farm Program and a presentation from the NLC Elementary School 3rd grade class. Mathes overviews what the young students were presenting.
NHHS will also be receiving the “Challenge Award” this Friday at 7:50 am for outstanding performance in state assessments.
The next regular Board of Education meeting will be on May 8, starting at 7:00 pm at the board office in Americus.
