Outdoor burning is banned today in the Emporia city limits, but not in the rest of Lyon County — although grass fires are strongly discouraged across the KVOE listening area Thursday.
Emporia Fire Chief Jack Taylor says open burning is not allowed in the city limits because of the wind speeds, which have already been above 40 mph Thursday morning. Osage and Wabaunsee counties have also issued county-wide burn bans for Thursday.
Wind advisories cover Lyon and all surrounding counties until 7 pm. Winds as high as 50 mph are possible through early evening.
4:30 am Thursday: Wind advisories re-issued for area counties
Outdoor burning will be discouraged for the second straight day due to high winds across the KVOE listening area.
Wind advisories have been re-issued for all area counties. For Lyon, Coffey, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties, the advisory goes from 10 am to 7 pm for sustained winds as high as 30 mph and gusts as high as 45 mph. For Chase and Greenwood counties, the advisory is already underway until 7 pm for winds as high as 35 mph and gusts as high as 50 mph.
Osage County is now in a burn ban for Thursday. Morris and Osage counties were under countywide burn bans Wednesday for similar wind speeds. Wind gusts in Emporia got as high as 46 mph Wednesday.
