The world premiere of a new documentary centred on delving into the question, “what is the common good?” took place Thursday evening.
The Granada Theatre held the special screening of the Pawel Kuczynski documentary “Charlie and the Common Good: Big Ideas in a Small Town” Thursday. The hour-long documentary focuses on Emporia State University professor Charles Brown and his conversations with both students and area residents on what constitutes the common good.
Dr. Brown explains the premise of the film more in depth.
Another major focus of the documentary is a debate which took place two years ago at ESU on the contested meaning of the common good between Dr. Brown and ESU history professor Greg Schneider. According to Schneider, there were multiple reasons the debate was held, namely to see if two individuals of vastly different ideological perspectives could find common ground on a topic such as the idea of the common good.
Dr. Brown explains what he hopes the film instils in those who see it.
Following the screening a special pannel discussion was held which included Dr. Brown, Anne Birney, ESU professor Steve Lovett and Kuczynski. The pannel took time to further discuss the film, offer their opinions and delve deeper into the ideas discussed within the documentary.
