Veterans on the USD 252 Southern Lyon County Honor Flight say they are blown away by the reception they had on the first day of their trip.
On that list is former Kansas governor Mike Hayden, who is on his first Honor Flight thanks to a longstanding friendship with USD 252 Superintendent Mike Argabright and the Argabright family. Hayden called it a solemn experience.
For Army veteran Greg Schonhardt of Olpe, the experience has already been breathtaking.
Hayden and Schonhardt are among 25 veterans and 22 high school students from Hartford and Olpe on this particular trip. After the schedule was front-loaded with trips to the World War II, Vietnam, Korea, Lincoln, Navy and Air Force memorials, as well as Arlington National Cemetery and the Iwo Jima monument Monday, Tuesday’s itinerary includes the White House, Smithsonian Museum, Botanical Gardens and Capitol before returning home Tuesday night.
