The Lyon-Chase County Transfer Station will see a lot of additional traffic over the next week.
Free Landfill Days begin Saturday and continue through May 5. Emporia Solid Waste Supervisor Keith Senn says several changes enacted last year, including one free trip instead of two, a maximum 1,000-pound load and vehicle restrictions to passenger cars, light trucks and trailers, will continue this year. Senn says the changes were designed to limit the inflow of trash, which had gotten up to 350 tons in years past, and the changes worked as hoped.
Last year’s event served almost 1,200 customers, who brought in 177 tons of waste including 55 tons of construction-demolition debris.
Trash loads of over 1,000 pounds will be charged at normal city rates, or 24.2 cents per 10 pounds for regular trash and 13.1 cents per 10 pounds for construction or demolition debris. Disposal of tires and appliances containing refrigerants will be charged at normal city rates.
Commercial and industrial businesses are not eligible for Free Landfill Days.
Hours are 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Saturday and 1-5 pm Sunday.
