A young tree found a new home in Peter Pan Park at the Mayor’s Tree Planting on Friday.
Even Emporia’s mayor was in the Arbor Day spirit while planting the tree.
The Mayor’s Tree Planting happens annually and is in a different location every year. Emporia is considered a Tree City and to keep this title, the city has to meet certain requirements every year. The city must plant a certain amount of trees in a year and it must have a tree maintenance program.
Trees are very important to the city and Mayor Jon Geitz explains why:
The tree that was chosen was a burr oak, a native tree to our area. Horticulturist Josh Nelson talks about why this tree was chosen.
The tree was bought locally from Bluestem and will receive care from the city for the next three years.
