Cleanup continues in several areas after high winds from Monday’s storms.
Both the David Traylor Zoo and nearby Soden’s Grove suffered tree and fence damage. Zoo Director Lisa Keith says the damage was at a level she hasn’t seen in some areas of the facility.
Thankfully, there were no injuries. Cleanup will continue this week.
In Chase County, Kansas Highway 177 has reopened for the second time as work continues to reset a train that apparently derailed during a microburst before sunrise. The highway had opened for several hours but had to close again so heavy equipment could work at the scene. Sheriff Richard Dorneker says the train track is cleared and repaired, although the over 20 cars pushed off the tracks near the K-177 bridge still need to be cleaned up. No injuries were reported.
Also, storms knocked out power to the Kansas Turnpike’s Matfield Green service area for better than four hours Monday. Restaurant and restroom availability were both offline from around noon to about 4:30 pm.
In Greenwood County, a long string of power poles was downed north of Eureka on Road P due to the storms. The poles were either repaired or replaced by Monday evening. The road has reopened to traffic.
Over 500 Westar Energy customers and another 1,300 Lyon-Coffey customers lost power early Monday. Those outages have all been restored.
