The suspect who apparently shot Rice County’s sheriff and undersheriff in separate but related incidents Monday apparently killed his father before taking his own life.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says David Madden, age 37, allegedly shot Rice County Undersheriff Chad Murphy four times as part of a car stop near Sterling. Madden allegedly had a woman and child in the car at the time of that shooting.
Madden then went to his house in Alden to get guns and ammunition before going to his father’s home outside Raymond. The investigation points to David Madden shooting his father to death before Sheriff Bryant Evans and a second deputy arrived at the scene. Madden exchanged gunfire with law enforcement, with Evans hit once in the leg.
Madden also exchanged gunfire with other law enforcement officers before authorities moved forward with their investigation, finding both Madden and his father dead on the property.
Madden was indicted on a federal charge of unlawful possession of a machine gun just last week. He is also a person of interest in the case of 21-year-old Megan Foglesong, who has been missing since 2015.
Evans has been treated and released. Murphy is in critical but stable condition at a Wichita hospital at last word.
6 am Tuesday: Rice County sheriff, undersheriff shot in related incidents
Local law enforcement agencies from around the area and around the state are offering their thoughts and prayers after Rice County’s sheriff and undersheriff were both shot in separate but apparently related incidents Monday.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says Undersheriff Chad Murphy was shot first around 5:10 pm as he tried a warrant-related car stop just north of Sterling. Murphy alerted dispatch he had been shot. He was later airlifted to a Wichita hospital and is in critical but stable condition with four gunshot wounds, including one to the neck.
The reported driver, 37-year-old David Madden, of Alden, allegedly fled to a rural residence southeast of Raymond. Sheriff Bryant Evans and a deputy exchanged gunshots at the residence and Evans was shot in the leg. He first taken to Lyons and later airlifted to a Wichita hospital for more treatment. He’s in good condition.
Several law enforcement agencies responded and set up a perimeter around the house. The KBI says two men have been found dead inside, but they have not publicly identified the men or the possible circumstances leading to their deaths.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is sweeping the house as the investigation continues. Court documents say ATF agents had searched Madden’s home earlier and found 24 metal pipe bombs and an unregistered AK-47 rifle. Madden was indicted on a federal charge of unlawful possession of a machine gun just last week. He is also a person of interest in the case of 21-year-old Megan Foglesong, who has been missing since 2015.
