With several local rivers continuing to rise above the flood stage, some river-specific flood warnings have been extended.
*Cottonwood at Emporia until Saturday morning. The river is currently above the flood stage of 20-foot at 23 feet as of 3:30 pm Wednesday. The river is expected to continue rising to around 23.2 feet by early Thursday morning and should fall below the flood stage by Friday afternoon.
*Neosho at Emporia from Wednesday afternoon to Thursday afternoon. The river is at 16.4 feet. It should go above the 19-foot flood stage Wednesday afternoon and crest at 20.2 feet early Thursday and go below flood stage later in the morning.
*Neosho at Neosho Rapids until Friday afternoon. at 3:30 pm Wednesday the river had risen to 23.9 feet. The flood stage is 22-foot. The river is anticipated to rise to 24 feet before falling below the flood stage by Thursday evening.
Greenwood County is in a flood warning until 5:15 pm. Flash flood watches continue areawide until 7 am Thursday.
Rivers came up quickly Tuesday night. On KVOE’s 8:05 am newscast Wednesday, Lyon County Emergency Management Director Jarrod Fell said that fast flow may cause issues for county roads.

Wednesday 3:25 pm: UPDATE: More rain expected into Thursday as rivers keep rising
Scattered moderate rainfall is possible Wednesday night into Thursday morning. If that develops, it would likely aggravate the current flooding situation to a certain degree.
Road closings and river-based flood warnings continue in Lyon County after anywhere from 3 to almost 6 inches of rain so far this week, including 5 inches at the KVOE studios. Less than an inch is expected through midday Thursday.
River-specific warnings
*Cottonwood at Emporia until late Thursday night. The river is above the 20-foot flood stage at 22.87 feet. The river should crest at 23.2 feet early Thursday and should go below flood stage before noon Thursday.
*Neosho at Emporia from Wednesday afternoon to Thursday afternoon. The river is at 16.4 feet. It should go above the 19-foot flood stage Wednesday afternoon and crest at 20.2 feet early Thursday and go below flood stage later in the morning.
*Neosho at Neosho Rapids until Friday evening. The river is above the 22-foot flood stage at 23.84 feet. It should crest at 25.5 feet early Thursday and go below flood stage Friday morning.

Flooding continues across Lyon County after two days of heavy rainfall.
River-specific warnings
*Cottonwood at Emporia until late Thursday night. The river is above the 20-foot flood stage at 22.2 feet. This is above the projected crest of 21.7 and a new projection has not been announced. It should go below flood stage before noon Thursday.
*Neosho at Emporia from Wednesday afternoon to Thursday afternoon. The river is at 16.4 feet. It should go above the 19-foot flood stage Wednesday afternoon and crest at 20.2 feet early Thursday and go below flood stage later in the morning.
*Neosho at Neosho Rapids until Friday evening. The river is above the 22-foot flood stage at 23.46 feet. It should crest at 25.5 feet early Thursday and go below flood stage Friday morning.
Greenwood County is now in a county-specific flood warning until 5:15 pm.

10 am Wednesday: Cottonwood, Neosho rivers in Lyon County above flood stage and rising
Lyon County’s list of road closures has been stable since mid-evening Tuesday. The same can’t be said for local rivers, which have risen past flood stage and are still going up Wednesday morning.
River-specific warnings
*Cottonwood at Emporia until late Thursday night. The river is above the 20-foot flood stage at 21.86 feet and is now above the originally projected crest of 21.7 feet. A new crest projection has not been announced. The river should go below flood stage before noon Thursday.
*Neosho at Emporia from Wednesday afternoon to Thursday afternoon. The river is at 16.4 feet. It should go above the 19-foot flood stage Wednesday afternoon, crest at 20.2 feet early Thursday and go below flood stage later in the morning.
*Neosho at Neosho Rapids until Friday evening. The river is above the 22-foot flood stage at 23.36 feet. It should crest at 25.5 feet early Thursday and go below flood stage Friday morning.
*Marais des Cygnes above Reading until late Wednesday night. The river is above the 19-foot flood stage and apparently has crested at 21.35, currently reading at 19.06. It should go below flood stage Wednesday afternoon.

*Chase and Greenwood counties until 11:15 am. Flooding has been reported near U and A Roads north of US Highway 50 in Chase County and near Eureka in Greenwood County. This warning affects all incorporated communities in both counties.
Flash flood watches continue areawide until 7 am Thursday.
5:30 am Wednesday: Area roads closed as river-based flood warnings continue
Several Lyon County roads are closed after flooding rains earlier this week.
Roads began flooding around midday Tuesday, both in and out of Emporia. All Emporia streets that had seen flooding are now open, but the list of Lyon County road closures grew as the day and night progressed:

*Neosho at Emporia from Wednesday afternoon to Thursday afternoon. The river was at 13.21 feet at last reading. It should go above the 19-foot flood stage Wednesday afternoon and crest at 20.2 feet early Thursday and go below flood stage later in the morning.
*Neosho at Neosho Rapids until Friday evening. The river is above the 22-foot flood stage at 23.02 feet. It should crest at 25.5 feet early Thursday and go below flood stage Friday morning.
*Marais des Cygnes above Reading until late Wednesday. The river is above the 19-foot flood stage and apparently has crested at 21.35, currently reading at 20.6. It should go below flood stage Wednesday afternoon.

Looking at the weather forecast, showers and storms are possible again Wednesday afternoon and especially tonight. There is a marginal risk of severe weather along and south of Interstate 35 and US Highway 50, with large hail the main severe weather concern. Unfortunately, heavy rainfall is possible again, especially Wednesday night into Thursday morning.
