In one sense, you can consider Emporia’s ignition sequence launched.
Ignite Emporia is a five-part strategic plan designed to address matters like workforce development, so-called workforce housing, business retention, community development and community marketing.
Vektek is the first investor, pledging $100,000. CEO Troy Estes says the broad-based interest among local government, business and education partners is what got Vektek on board. He adds it also increases the potential for long-term success.
Opportunity Funding conducted confidential interviews last fall and winter at the start of the process. Senior project director Matt Sabala says this is a plan essentially developed by the Emporia community.
Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Jeanine McKenna:
McKenna says the Chamber had been talking with members and other local business leaders about community direction and community needs. Opportunity Funding then conducted interviews to test the feedback coming into the Chamber.
So far, around $300,000 has been raised over the past three weeks to fund the overall effort. The goal is $1.6 million by Aug. 31.
