10,000 pounds of waste was collected Saturday during the ESB Financial Community Wide Shred Day event.
The annual shredding event allows residents a free opportunity to dispose of old records such as credit card statements, billing statements, medical bills and other documents with their names on them. ESB Financial Vice President Karen Sommers explains there are essentially two main reasons they hold the event each year.
According to Sommers, the turnout was steady at the south parking lot of ESB Financial’s Merchant Street location from 9 am to noon.
Sommers adds they hold the event each year after tax day as it is time when many people purge their outdated records.
She says providing this service to the community reduces the number of individuals who may simply throw their records away or dispose of them in landfills. Sommers strongly warns against disposing of any records in this manner as it opens the door for identity thieves to get their hands on sensitive information.
Shredding materials were not the only thing being collected Saturday as both E-waste and the city of Emporia’s cardboard trucks were both on hand. The shred truck and E-waste trailer both left the event completely filled with materials.
