A new candidate has emerged seeking a seat on the Emporia City Commission.
Emporia resident Joni Austenfeld officially filed for city commission Wednesday. Austenfeld, a native of Emporia, returned to the community last November after living what she calls “the big city life.”
Austenfeld tells KVOE News her family has a proud tradition of being involved in the local community at several levels.
Austenfeld has held numerous positions throughout her life which she feels makes her a strong candidate for city commission. This includes being a real-estate developer and formerly holding the title of President of the Chamber of Commerce for the city of Kennedale, a suburb of Fort Worth Texas.
Austenfeld becomes the fourth individual to file for city commission following incumbent Becky Smith, current Emporia School Board member Susan Brinkman and most recently Todd Maddox who filed late last month. The candidate filing and withdrawal deadline is June 3. If enough candidates file paperwork by then, a primary election will be held Aug. 6.
