Pomp and circumstance ruled White Auditorium as Emporia High held its commencement activities Sunday.
Principal Britton Hart says he’s surprised by the “depth and quality” of the graduating class.
This year’s class is Emporia High’s first to use trimester scheduling throughout their high school career as opposed to the traditional semester model. Hart says it’s also the first class to fully use individual plans of study, tap into a new social-emotional approach to learning and have students graduate with college senior-level credit through education and work experience.
The 2019 class generated around $1.3 million in scholarships.
Hart is leaving Emporia High to join the Kansas Association of School Boards, but he says current assistant principal Dathan Fischer will do well as he shifts to his new role. He also expects Emporia High students will maintain their level of excellence, thanks to their own work but also that of teachers, staff and the administrative team.
Over 300 students graduated.
