Westar Energy made quick work of upgrades to a substation near Emporia State University on Sunday.
Originally, power to ESU was supposed to have been down for 12 hours. Crews got done in six. Spokesperson Kaley Bohlen says the goal was to improve power reliability on campus.
Seven poles and two switches were replaced, along with conductors, insulators and other equipment. Bohlen says power equipment can last decades, but it’s best to have as up-to-date equipment as possible so customers have the most reliable service.
The project is part of Emporia State’s ongoing work to bury above-ground electric and other utility cables underground. Work continues on the south edge of campus at this time.
