Two Emporia State Student Athletes are among the finalist for the MIAAs Ken B. Jones award. Track and Field athlete Brianna Schmidt and football player Landon Nault.
The award recognizes the Student Athlete for, not only their athletic accomplishments but, their in classroom and in community accomplishments.
Schmitz won the MIAA Championship in the outdoor heptathlon with 5,003 points. It is the second highest point total in Emporia State history. She is ranked 12th in the nation headed into the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. She earned All-American honors for the Hornets during the indoor season by finishing fourth in the pentathlon at this year’s NCAA Indoor Championships. She graduated with a 3.96 GPA in physical education and has a 4.00 in her master’s level program in health, physical education and recreation this year. She is an MIAA Scholar-Athlete and member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and the ESU Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.
Landon Nault led the MIAA in rushing and earned Second-Team All-MIAA honors last fall. He had 1,008 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground for Emporia State and was the first Hornet with over 1,000 yards in over a decade as he helped lead the Hornets to the Corsicana Bowl championship.
He graduated with a 3.97 GPA in biology and has been accepted into physical therapy school at the University of Oklahoma.
The Award winners will be announced on June 3rd in Kansas City during the Annual Awards ceremony.
Nault and Schmitz will be joined in Kansas City by former Lady Hornets Michelle Stueve Corpening and Melissa Stevens who are being inducted into the MIAA Hall of Fame during the Awards Celebration.
