Plans continue to circulate regarding the USD 253 bond election later this year.
During the USD 253 Board of Education meeting, Wednesday HTK Architects representatives were in attendance to present a timeline draft regarding the election. The presentation included rough dates for an informational campaign for district stakeholders.
The campaign will include question and answer sessions along with town hall meetings to keep patrons as informed as possible leading up to the election. There is currently no set date for when these sessions will take place, however, Superintendent Kevin Case tells KVOE News the district will be working to solidify those plans hopefully by early to mid-June.
Discussions eventually shifted focus from bond elections to early childhood learning.
Earlier this year HTK proposed an option to the board to either upgrade the Maynard Early Childhood Center or possibly build a new center. As it stands Maynard was not designed as an early childhood development building and has several issues including a lack of sufficient space.
The construction of a new facility would see these needs met and would be designed specifically to meet early learning needs. Case explains this is not an easy decision to make, which is why the proposition of establishing a new task force for the purpose of further study was presented Wednesday.
The board decided each member will submit names of individuals they feel would provide the best representation to help build the core of the task force. Case feels having collaborative relationships, such as this, which provide input to the district is a vital component to the district’s success.
Case anticipates recommendations will start to be made within the coming weeks.
In other business, the board received an update from the Kansas Education Systems Accreditation (KESA) Outside Visitation Team. The Board also approved a ten cent increase for breakfast and five-cent increase for lunches for the 2019-2020 academic year.
Approval was also given for the purchase of a new four-post bus lift for the transportation department totalling $31,545.00. One executive session was held with no action taken.
The board will next meet Wednesday, June 12 at 7 pm inside the Mary Herbert Education Center.
