The risk of severe thunderstorms is now upon us through the early evening hours.
The Storm Prediction Center has issued a tornado watch for Lyon, Coffey, Osage, Morris and Wabaunsee counties until 10 pm. Besides tornadoes, hail to the size of limes — around 2 inches in diameter — and wind gusts as high as 70 mph are the main concerns.
Travelers on the Kansas Turnpike are advised to seek safe haven at one of the nearly 30 shelters along the highway, including five in the KVOE listening area:
*Emporia (mile marker 127): Basement of toll building
*Emporia service area (mile marker 132): Convenience store restrooms
*Admire/Council Grove/Osage City (mile marker 147): Underground, northeast of tollbooth
*Cassoday (mile marker 92): Underground, northeast of tollbooth
*Matfield Green service area (mile marker 97): Large restrooms
