Budget requests for 2020 dictated the majority of conversations during the Emporia City Commission study session Wednesday morning.
The commission received a total of seven requests from area organizations including the Regional Development Association, Cornerhouse, the Emporia Municipal Band, Emporia Enterprises, Emporia State University’s Drug and Alcohol Prevention program and Crosswind’s Counseling and Wellness. The majority of requests saw increases from year’s past which Mayor Jon Geitz explains is relatively typical.
One thing which is not typical was the source of one of the requests Wednesday. Friends of Troop 157, a non-profit organization established to help offset costs for scouts and scout families, made a request of $5,000.
According to Mayor Geitz neither he nor other city staff can recall a time where an allocation from the budget has been made to a friends group. Geitz says despite the rarity of the request, it will still go through the normal budget process later this summer.
In other business commissioners also reviewed the Capital Improvement Plan and held discussions on a CDGB grant application for the city of Emporia. The Emporia City Commission will have an action session next Wednesday at 1:30 pm inside the municipal courtroom at White Auditorium.
