Lyon County Emergency Management Director Jarrod Fell is asking county residents for patience, especially if they use the county’s gravel road network. Reason being: flooding has caused extensive damage.
It’s the third time this month many county roads have been damaged. Photos from the Lyon County Highway Department and now online at KVOE.com demonstrate the extent of that damage.
Earlier this week, the Federal Emergency Management Agency said close to 20 Kansas counties, including Chase, Greenwood and Osage, were approved for federal money. Lyon County was not on that list, but Fell says the county hasn’t formally asked for reimbursement aid yet and the approved counties need equipment or other help immediately.
The current road closure list includes:

Fell also discussed severe weather, with two sets of tornado warnings for parts of Lyon County over the past week. He also clarified the siren sounding policy, saying first responder reports and National Weather Service warnings are part of the decision-making process. Other factors?
Fell says the goal is to have people pay attention to the warnings and to keep the number of false alarms as low as possible.
