Emporians again welcome Dirty Kanza participants with open arms

Another year, another success for the Dirty Kanza.

Riders from around the country and around the world — over 3,000 total — tested their mettle Saturday. Rider Jeff Longbine did the 50-mile race with his daughter, Lauren. Longbine, a one-time Emporia city commissioner and now Kansas Senate Vice President, said the event is “incredible” for Emporia, Lyon County and the state.

Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Susan Rathke agrees, saying the economic impact just on Emporia is now around $2 million, thanks to the riders and thousands of other people from around the world who attend. She says part of the draw is Emporia’s welcoming atmosphere.

Ben Schubert has been part of that welcome the past few years as an Airbnb host. He hosted six riders over the past week.

Emporia Main Street Director Casey Woods says DK became an ideal avenue for Flint Hills entrepreneurs — and also for existing businesses.

Many people come to the Dirty Kanza each year for the experience and the atmosphere, but many also come to support family or friends riding in the race. Sydney Tollefson is in Emporia to support her friend, Heather Finnerty in the 100-mile race. Tollefson says the atmosphere is what she enjoys the most about the DK.

Longtime organizer Lelan Dains says last year’s DK set the bar, but this year looks to raise it even higher.
