Chase County is in the process of compiling a full list of damaged roadways following the area’s third round of flooding from May.
Chase County Emergency Management Director Scott Wiltse says at this time he cannot quantify just how many roadways are in need of repair work as crews are still out gathering estimates and plotting locations on a map. He adds repair work has already seen some setbacks due to the need to repair the same roadway multiple times in some areas.
While water has begun to dry up in several areas, Wiltse tells KVOE News the lingering effects are also causing difficulties for Chase County residents.
The observed damages have ranged from minor to major in many areas. According to Wiltse, on some roadways sections of the road have been washed away while other roads have seen the entire road washed away for as far as half a mile.
Damage has also been reported to the base of some roadways as well.
At this time Wiltse says they are in the process of prioritizing which roads are in the most desperate need of attention. The Emergency Management Department asks all Chase County residents to remain patient throughout the process.
Currently, Chase County is the only area county not added to a recent federal disaster declaration which includes Lyon, Coffey, Greenwood, Osage, Morris and Wabaunsee counties. However, Chase County could be added at a later time.
