Strong storms brought heavy rain and borderline severe winds to the KVOE listening area Friday morning.
Storms led to several power outages in and around Emporia, Lebo, Madison, New Strawn and Olpe. Less than 100 Westar Energy customers were offline as a result. Isolated tree damage was reported in Thorndale as well, with small tree branches downed and at least one small tree reported as snapped.
Rain totals were minor to moderate:
*KVOE studios: 0.38 inches
*Emporia Municipal Airport: 0.40 inches
With storms on the way out, the heat is on for the rest of the day. Air temperatures could get to 90 degrees. Heat indices will vary, with 102 the expected heat index for Emporia and the “feel-like” temperature as high as 108 degrees in Chase and Greenwood counties. Both counties are in a heat advisory from 1-8 pm.
For the weekend, a slight severe weather risk is in the areawide outlook both Saturday and Sunday. The Storm Prediction Center says all severe weather hazards are possible both weekend days.
