Stifling heat blasted the KVOE listening area after noon Friday.
Temperatures climbed from 67 degrees at 11 am to 90 degrees at 5 pm in Emporia. Making matters worse was relative humidity near 80 percent, shoving the heat index to 106 degrees.
Friday evening is ending with a severe thunderstorm watch for Wabaunsee County until 2 am Saturday.
Heat index readings won’t be so oppressive Saturday — the National Weather Service expects heat indices as high as 97 — but there will be enough moisture in the air to have a decent chance of showers and storms by late morning and a better chance after sunset. There is currently an enhanced risk of all hazards from late afternoon through the evening, although the greatest concerns are hail, high winds and heavy rain.
Sunday also has a slight severe weather risk, and again all hazards are possible.
Overlapping both time periods is a flash flood watch for Chase and Greenwood counties from 4 pm Saturday to 1 am Monday.
