Heavy rainfall across the KVOE listening area has led to flooding reports in and near Emporia.
Rain came down hard between 4:30 and 5:15 am at the KVOE studios, with 2.8 inches of rain total since 10 pm Saturday. That prompted Emporia Police to close the Mechanic Street underpass, but that has now reopened. Also, 12th at Whildin has reopened after prior flooding. Burlingame at Riley is still listed as underwater.
Water was reported on 24th between Graphic Arts and Industrial and at 30th and Graphic Arts, although those two locations were largely clear as of 6:15 am.
Americus Road is also reported as underwater from the town’s north city limits to Hickory as of 5 am. Road F was also reported underwater near Road 230, and several streets in Americus have also been reported as inundated. Road 215 from Americus Road to Road J is also underwater.
Elsewhere, there was a report of water over Road 270 at Kansas Highway 99. That has since cleared.
So far, there have been no emergency issues reported as a result of the flooding.

*Lyndon: 3.3 inches
*Madison: 3.25 inches Sunday, 4.25 inches total
*Melvern Lake dam: 4.5 inches
*Neosho Rapids: 5 inches estimated Sunday, 5.5 inches total
*Reading: 4 inches Sunday
*North central Lyon County: 3.8 to 4.3 inches total
The rain from the weekend and last week, where some area locations picked up over 2 inches of rain, has now generated river-based flood warnings across the KVOE listening area:
*Cottonwood River at Emporia: Warning until 7:24 pm Thursday. Early Sunday the river was 7 feet below flood stage of 20 feet. It is expected to exceed flood stage and climb to 23.7 feet by Tuesday morning.
*Neosho River at Emporia: Warning until 7:32 am Tuesday. Early Sunday morning the river was reported at 14.8 feet, flood stage is 19 feet. Forecast shows the river passing flood stage and reaching 20.6 feet Monday morning.
*Cottonwood River at Cottonwood Falls: Warning until 9 pm Wednesday. River was under 3 feet early Sunday, below flood stage of 9 feet. It should climb above flood stage and crest at 13.5 feet Monday morning, above the prior forecast of 9.7 feet.
*Cottonwood at Plymouth: Warning until 2 am Wednesday. River was just under 22 feet Sunday morning. It should go above the 32-foot flood stage by Sunday night and crest at 32.8 feet Monday evening.
*Neosho River at Neosho Rapids: Warning until 2:30 pm Wednesday. River is at 20.3 feet, below flood stage of 22. River should go above flood stage Sunday night and rise to 22.4 feet Monday evening. River should go below flood stage Tuesday evening.

5-7 am Sunday: Flooding reported on Emporia, Americus streets and K-99 north of Emporia

Rain came down hard between 4:30 and 5:15 am at the KVOE studios, with 2.4 inches of rain total since 10 pm Saturday. That prompted Emporia Police to close the Mechanic Street underpass. As of 6:30 am, the 1300 and 1400 blocks of East 12th and the intersection of Burlingame and Riley were underwater.
Water was reported on 24th between Graphic Arts and Industrial and at 30th and Graphic Arts, although those two locations were largely clear as of 6:15 am.
Americus Road is also reported as underwater from the town’s north city limits to Hickory as of 5 am. Road F was also reported underwater near Road 230, and several streets in Americus have also been reported as inundated. Road 215 from Americus Road to Road J is also underwater.
