Despite the cancellation of the annual Tour De Lyon County fun ride this past weekend, organizers are not giving up on supporting local initiatives.
Messiah Lutheran Church will be the site of the upcoming Tour De Lyon County drive-through barbeque fundraiser Tuesday evening. All funds will benefit Special Olympics and the Junior Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).
KVOE News has reported recently the annual fun ride — originally scheduled for this past Sunday — was cancelled due to damages from recent rainfall and severe weather over the past several weeks. Due to this, Tour De Lyon County organizer Kent Schnakenberg says both Special Olympics and JDRF would lose out on a significant amount of money, which is why organizers decided to continue the fundraising campaign through different local events.
The drive through barbecue will take place at Messiah Lutheran Church at 11th and Neosho from 4-7 pm. The menu will consist of hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and dessert. Cost of a meal is a free will donation.
The barbecue has a preview event Tuesday morning. Evora Wheeler has agreed to make a pie of choice and a pan of cinnamon rolls for the event. On top of the barbecue fundraiser Tuesday, Schnakenberg says they are also selling “summer cool packages,” which consist of several items including insulated cups with Tour De Lyon County printed on them. Each package costs $20 and as of last week, only 100 remained. If you would like to purchase a summer cool package they are available at Navrat’s Office Products, High Gear Cyclery and Gravel City Adventure.
