The Prairie Street overpass is closed for at least the next three months.
Lyon County Engineer Chip Woods, a guest on KVOE’s 8:05 am newscast Tuesday, says the bridge is structurally sound but renovations are needed.
The detour will send traffic on the north of the bridge along Sixth Avenue east to Commercial and then south to South Avenue before heading back west to Prairie. The detour then reverses itself if you’re approaching the bridge from the south. The work will also mean additional traffic at Emporia’s downtown underpasses along Mechanic, Congress and State streets.
Work could take three months, weather permitting. Woods says Snodgrass and Sons is the contractor on the project.
In other construction news, the downtown Emporia sanitary sewer project is now moving into a well-traveled street on the north side of downtown. On Monday, a crew started work on 12th Avenue just west of Merchant. Eastbound traffic is getting pushed to the turning lane at Merchant to get around the work zone.
