Organizers of Tour de Lyon county were beaming after Tuesday’s drive-thru barbecue event at Messiah Lutheran Church.
Team Schnak founder Kent Schnakenberg says about 400 meals were served. Donations from the meal and the KVOE auction of an Evora Wheeler pie of choice and pan of cinnamon rolls generated close to $3,400.
Undersheriff and local Special Olympics spokesman John Koelsch was impressed.
The fundraising meal came about after Tour de Lyon County organizers had to cancel the event earlier this month due to wet grounds at Soden’s Grove. Between Tuesday’s meal and the sales of “summer stay-cool specials,” including an insulated cup, coaster and coozie, fundraising has now met goal of $7,000. Proceeds benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Team Schnak and local Special Olympics teams.
Plans are now developing for a “fun ride” bicycle event to raise money for repairs to the Sertoma Club’s miniature train track. Details about that event will be announced as they are finalized.
