Lyon County will receive nearly $14,000 in federal funds to help emergency food and shelter programs.
A national board chaired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and including representatives of numerous non-profits — American Red Cross, Catholic Charities, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA, Jewish Federations of North America, Salvation Army and United Way Worldwide — made the selection.
A local board made up of the United Way of the Flint Hills, ECKAN, Emporia Rescue Mission, American Red Cross, Catholic Charities and others will now determine how these funds will be used by the different emergency food and shelter programs. Receiving agencies must be either private voluntary nonprofits or government units; be eligible to receive federal funds; have an accounting system; practice nondiscrimination; have a demonstrated capacity to deliver emergency food and shelter programs; and have a voluntary board if the agency is a private voluntary organization.
Agencies interested in applying are encouraged to call Hannah Crowl of the United Way of the Flint Hills at 342-7564. Applications are due by noon July 8.
