The short-term steambath continues this weekend for most of the KVOE listening area.
For the second straight day, Lyon County and several surrounding counties are under a heat advisory from 1-8 pm. Coffey, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties are also included.
Morris and Wabaunsee counties, meanwhile, have a third straight day of heat advisories coming Sunday from 1-8 pm. Heat index readings could be as high as 107 degrees both days.
Newman Regional Health Dr. Ryan LaSota joined KVOE’s Morning Show on Friday with some heat-related health tips. He says you need to listen to your body, because things can go from heat exhaustion to heat stroke in short order. Hydration is key, both before and during time outside.
Other tips include:
*Stay away from carbonated or alcoholic drinks
*Wear light and loose-fitting clothes
*Avoid strenuous activity
*Take frequent breaks
*Stay in air conditioning or the shade as much as possible.
One thing not to do: go from one extreme — the heat — to the other — cold. The body may go into shock, causing urgent or life-threatening conditions.
Also, remember to check on children, pets and the elderly to make sure they are OK.
Emporia fire crews did not go on any heat-related calls in town Friday, but EMS was called out to the Kansas Turnpike after one person got locked inside a vehicle near the Flint Hills cattle pens exit Friday evening. The Turnpike Authority says that person kicked out a window before help arrived, and EMS says it was canceled before getting out of town. Further details have not been released.
